Connect to Protect with TU Canada

August 27, 2022 @ 9:00 AM 5:00 PM UTC-4

Connect and Protect is a new program Trout Unlimited Canada created to provide space for Black, Indigenous and Racialized Communities, and allies to connect with and protect nature.

On August 27, 2022, join us for a free, full day event filled with knowledge sharing, community building, and placemaking. In the morning, Trout Unlimited Canada and Credit Valley Conservation will lead the participants through an invasive species management activity, and discuss the importance of biodiversity. Afterwards, we’ll gather for lunch and have the opportunity to create community. In the afternoon, Brown Girl Outdoor World will lead a discussion on the importance of inclusive programming and the benefits of meaningful inclusion of diverse communities in conservation work. Well end the day with Brown Girl Outdoor World leading an intro to fly fishing session, covering introductory information about fly fishing and the importance of conservation to the sport, followed by time on the water putting what we’ve learned into practice.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Introduction to fly fishing equipment
  • How to use equipment
  • Basic knots
  • Casting

Chest waders and fly fishing equipment will be available to borrow. Participants are responsible for having a valid Ontario Outdoors Card and/or Fishing licence at the time of the event if they want to fish. Without a valid licence participants can only practice in casting on land.

Lunch, snacks, water, and necessary equipment will be provided. Prize giveaways will be distributed at the end of the day’s events.

This event is for those 18+. We are reserving 90% of the tickets for BIPOC, and 10% of the tickets for BIPOC allies. Space is extremely limited. Please sign up if you are committed to attending. We are striving to make this an inclusive and accessible event that enable all individuals to participate.
